Mike Hammond

Mike Hammond sadly died in a tragic single car road traffic collsion in Canada in 2023 days before he was due to sign for the Glasgow Clan.

Mike Hammond's Career

Mike Hammond made his professional debut in the 2015/16 season in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) for the Cinicinnati Cyclones where he would ice in 26 games putting up a low ranged 4 points before moving to Brampton Beast where he would ice for another 19 games putting up a further 11 points.

After a lacklusture season he would make his first journey to the UK to join the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) to play for the Braehead Clan (now known as Glasgow Clan) , Hammond would quickly become a star player in the league and he should that he was not a bust of a player after one bad year as he would ice for 43 games that season putting up 46 points to give himself a solid 1.07 point per game average (PPG).

Despite all the love he had in the Braehead Arena, Hammond decided that he was ready to make a move to the Manchester Storm which proved to be the correct choice as he would go onto dominate the league and finish as the top point scorer, recording a career high of 86 points. He would make a return the next season to produce roughly the same type of game, apart from not becoming a two time Patton Conference Champion or leading the league in points however, he scored 57 assists which was the highest in the league.

Sadly Mike Hammond would not return to the EIHL the next season instead he would fly over the pond but not to North America but to Germany to the town of  Weißwasser to play for the Lausitzer Fuchse in DEL2 a slightly higher skilled league than the EIHL and Hammond took it by storm dominated the league by playing 48 games scoring a high of 67 points.  He would stay in Europe by moving to Denmark to play for the Odense Bulldogs where he skated for 20 games putting up 22 points however, he would leave the Bulldogs for the Frederikshavn White Hawks where he played for a short period of time which was a small number of 12 games scoring 12 points for 1 PPG.

In the same year Mike Hammond made a return to EIHL action however, it was slighty different as it was the EIHL Series during the Covid 19 pandemic meaning he was drafted to the Coventry Blaze. He would win two awards in the EIHL Series which were most points and most assists by a British player which was 22 points and 16 assists, which awarded him a spot on the EIHL Series All-Star team.

He would make his way back to Germany but to one of their lower leagues the Germany3 league otherwise known as Oberliga which is the league under DEL2 and above Germany4 otherwise known as Regionalliga. He would be skating with a team called Hannover Scorpions which is a common landing spot for players looking for a step down from the EIHL. He would skate for 49 games putting up a career high of 90 points which meant he was the 2nd highest point scorer being 12 points behind Kyle Brothers who had 102 points.

in his last season of action he decided to step back up and return to the EIHL to play for the Nottingham Panthers, which was a choice which not only Panthers loved but also every EIHL loved as Hammond was such a loved player in the UK. This season saw a quieter one on the points front with 36 points in 53 games. Mike Hammond had many success with Team GB however, this season marked one of the best as he helped Team GB win a gold medal.

Mike Hammond was set to make a return to the EIHL but this time it was a return to the Glasgow Clan (formerly known as Braehead Clan) but sadly Mike lost his life in a single vechile road traffic collsion a few days before he was to be announced. Mike had a wonderful career and he will be known as a legend in the EIHL forever.
