Ice hockey fans in the UK are familiar with three main leagues: the Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL), the National Ice Hockey League (NIHL), and the Scottish National League (SNL). Each league has its own strengths and purpose within the UK hockey system, but what makes one better than the other?
Elite Ice Hockey League (EIHL) – The Top Tier of UK Hockey
The EIHL is the highest level of ice hockey in the UK, featuring fully professional teams with the largest budgets, most skilled players, and biggest fanbases. It is not on the same level as Europe's top leagues like the SHL (Sweden), Liiga (Finland), or DEL (Germany), but it is the premier option for competitive hockey in Britain.
A key factor that makes the EIHL stand out is its ability to attract high-quality imports, primarily from North America, which leads to a fast-paced, physical, and skilled style of play. The league’s large crowds and passionate fanbases also add to the experience, with teams like Belfast Giants, Nottingham Panthers, and Sheffield Steelersregularly playing in front of 5,000+ fans.
The EIHL is also known for its unpredictability, where upsets happen more often than in lower leagues, such as Fife Flyers’ Challenge Cup semi-final victory over Sheffield Steelers.
National Ice Hockey League (NIHL) – A Competitive and Developmental League
The NIHL is the second tier of British ice hockey, consisting of 11 teams playing a 56-game season. While it is not as skilled or well-funded as the EIHL, it still offers competitive, entertaining hockey.
One of the NIHL’s biggest strengths is its focus on homegrown British talent. The league has a mix of experienced domestic players and young developing talent, with fewer import players than the EIHL. Many EIHL-bound playersstart their careers in the NIHL, making it a crucial development league.
The NIHL also appeals to fans who want affordable, local hockey, especially in towns and cities without an EIHL team. Although arena sizes and attendance are smaller, the lower ticket prices and close-knit fanbases create an engaging atmosphere. Some teams offer very affordable tickets, making it a great option for fans looking for a budget-friendly alternative to the EIHL. Additionally, as NIHL clubs continue to invest in their facilities and rosters, some teams may have ambitions to move up to the EIHL in the future.
Scottish National League (SNL) – A Grassroots and Regional League
The SNL is a semi-professional, regional league that plays a vital role in developing Scottish hockey talent. Unlike the EIHL and NIHL, which cover teams across the UK, the SNL operates solely in Scotland, making it a key part of the country's hockey infrastructure.
While the SNL lacks the skill level and competitiveness of the EIHL and NIHL, it is crucial for Scottish player development. Most EIHL and NIHL homegrown players come from England, but the SNL gives Scottish players a place to develop their skills before moving up. Scotland has produced some of the best British players ever, such as Tony Hand and Colin Shields, and the SNL ensures young Scots have a pathway into higher leagues.
The SNL remains an accessible and community-driven league, with many clubs maintaining strong local support. While its ticket prices are not necessarily the cheapest in UK hockey, it still provides affordable options compared to the EIHL, and fans benefit from strong local rivalries and a close connection with teams. Classic matchups like the Tayside rivalry between Dundee Rockets and Kirkcaldy Kestrels, as well as the Firth of Forth rivalry between Kirkcaldy Kestrels and Edinburgh Capitals, bring an extra level of excitement to the league.
The style of play is often more open and high-scoring, making for entertaining games even if the physicality and pace are lower than in the NIHL and EIHL.
Conclusion: Which League is Best?
Each league serves a different purpose in UK ice hockey:
The EIHL is the best choice for fans wanting high-level, professional hockey with skilled players, large crowds, and a North American-style game.
The NIHL is great for affordability and development, offering competitive games with a mix of experienced and young British players.
The SNL is crucial for grassroots hockey in Scotland, providing local rivalries, player development, and community-focused hockey.
Ultimately, the best league depends on what fans are looking for—whether it’s the top-tier professionalism of the EIHL, the development-focused competition of the NIHL, or the community-driven passion of the SNL.
