Artur Gatiyatov: The Successor to Kyle Osterberg for the Fife Flyers?

As we dive deeper into the offseason, we're witnessing moves between teams and new signings as replacements. Following the departure of fan favourite Kyle Osterberg, who had a groundbreaking season with the Fife Flyers last year, head coach Tom Coolen has brought in Artur Gatiyatov, a young, talented player from Kazakhstan. The main question on the minds of fans and EIHL analysts is whether Artur Gatiyatov can fill the void left by Kyle Osterberg's departure. Osterberg, a seasoned hockey player from Minnesota, brought firepower and a strong offensive presence to the Flyers. In contrast, Gatiyatov, although young, has been playing professionally for seven years and has already had an impactful career, showing great potential in leagues such as the MHL and Mestis. This article will delve into the careers of both players, providing a detailed comparison to determine if Gatiyatov can indeed match Osterberg's contributions and fill the gap he has left. Let's dive into their careers to see if Gatiyatov is capable of stepping up to the challenge.

Kyle Osterberg: A Proven Veteran

Early Career

In 2009/10 Kyle Osterberg laced up for Lakeville South High in the USHS-MN and it was an exciting time for Osterberg as he would sit with a 2.28 point per game (PPG) average during the season and a 2.00 PPG average during the playoffs. During the league’s season he would start for 26 games where he lit the light 18 times and assisted a further 39 goals (G) to secure 57 points (Pts). He skated for 3 playoff games securing 6 Pts; 5 of which were assists (A). Osterberg also played for the USNTDP Juniors in the USHL for two seasons where he played 59 successful games where he put up 23 Pts; however, his defensive skills needed to be improved as he had a +/- score of -4.5.

College

Like most young players; Kyle Osterberg went to college and played NCAA hockey for the University of Minnesota - Duluth. Osterberg’s skills developed a lot at university, his shooting ability, passing ability, offensive read and most importantly his defensive presence. Osterberg’s weakness going into the NCAA was his defensive awareness so it was no surprise that improving his defensive game. He played 149 games scoring 37 G and assisting 41 of his teammates goals for 78 Pts. He also had a +/- score of +2.25.

European Experience

Throughout his professional career, Kyle Osterberg has played in seven different European leagues for eight different teams. His best season in Europe was in the Germany3 league with the Deggendorfer SC as he put up 65 Pts in only 36 games, averaging 1.81 PPG. His discipline was not the best that season as he put up 63 penalty minutes (PIM); the most in his career.

He would make a return to Germany for a part of the 2022/23 season with the Eisbären Regensburg in the DEL2 (the second highest league in Germany). He demonstrated a good skating ability as you would see him out skating his opponents allowing him to set up plays and even make breaks at the net; allowing him to put the puck in the back of the net.

His time in the Slovak Extraliga was an up and down time. In the 2020/21 Osterberg signed for the DVTK Jegesmedvék. He played 39 games and during these games he had a strong offensive presence; putting up 32 Pts; however, his defensive awareness wasn’t so good. This season marked his worst defensive season of his career, his back checking was lacking a bit and he struggled to cover the point, he also produced a +/- score of -14, the worst in his career.

Fife Flyers Success

It was the 23/24 season which saw Kyle Osterberg make the move to the Fife Flyers under head coach Tom Coolen. Kyle Osterberg’s signing brought a lot of excitement and fans were hoping he would become a star player and they weren’t wrong as he hit the road running as he put up 5 Pts in his first game. Early on he cemented himself as one of the team’s playmakers alongside Lucas Chiodo. He played an excellent season playing 57 games across all EIHL competitions putting up 61 Pts meaning he had a PPG average of 1.07, the 4th highest in his career. He finished within the top 10 point scorer in the league.

Summary and Impact

Kyle Osterberg's career is marked by consistent performance and significant achievements at every level of play. His offensive prowess and development over the years have made him a valuable player, with notable success in various leagues, including the Germany3 league and the Slovak Extraliga. His most recent season with the Fife Flyers saw him quickly establish himself as a key playmaker, contributing significantly to the team's success. Osterberg's immediate and profound impact on the Fife Flyers, evidenced by his top-10 finish in league point scoring, makes his departure a significant loss for the team. His journey reflects a player who has continuously developed his skills and made substantial contributions wherever he has played.

Artur Gatiyatov: A Rising Talent

Early Career

Artur Gatiyatov is the name which appears on the Barys Astana U18 roster for the 2015/16 & 2016/17 seasons. There is no record of games played in the 2015/16 season (on Elite Prospects {EP}); however, there is for the 2016/17 season and the stats are impressive. Gatiyatov set out a goal to impress everyone and he sure did by becoming the team’s best player. He cemented himself as a top playmaker alongside Sanzher Negmet (a retired Kazakh forward). He played 29 games, scoring 22 goals (G) and had 44 assists (A) for a groundbreaking 63 (Pts). This gave him a point per game (PPG) average of 2.17.

Artur made a move to the Molodyozhnaya Hokkeinaya Liga (which is a Russian junior league also known as MHL) to play for the Snezhnye Barsy Astana. He would play for them for two seasons to help develop his game to make him ready for a leap to a professional level. He would demonstrate his passing prowess as he would become a strong playmaker as he would play 114 games where he put up 72A. His passing ability was solid as he could saucer pass the puck to his teammates which makes it difficult for others to win the puck. His shooting skills were improving as he scored 39G

He would also play 9 games with the Snezhnye Barsy Nur - Sultan also in the MHL where he put up 12Pts which was 5G and 7A which gave him a PPG average of 1.33.

Professional Experience

Despite playing and being on contract with professional teams; Gatiyatov didn’t sign his first full time professional contract until the 2020/21 season. He has previously been on contract with the Nomad Astana; however, he never played a game with them (he was on contract with them during the 2017/18 & 2018/19). He would leave them and sign for the Barys Nur - Sultan in the KHL, where he played 2 games but put up no points. He would then move to the VHL to play for the Nomad Nur - Sultan, where he played 46 games, which he would score 2G and 11A for 13 Pts which resulted in a PPG average of 0.28 which is why he would still play games in the MHL.

For the 2020/21 season, Gatiyatov signed his first ever full time professional contract with the Nomad Nur - Sultan but this time in the Kazakhstan Hockey League (please note this does not abbreviate to KHL). He would have a dominating season at both ends of the ice with his impressive +/- score of +11 or his impressive 30 Pts in his rookie season. He would demonstrate how good his snapshot was by surprising goalies and defenders with goals before they could see the shots. He would return for a second season and he would play even better and in fewer games. He would play 43 games where he scored 12G and assisted a further 21 and this would totalled 33 Pts. He also had a +/- score of +12.

He would for the first time ever leave Kazakhstan. He would make the move to the Mestis League in Finland with Joensuun Kiekko - Pojat (JoKP). Mestis is a good league for young players to develop as they will be able to play alongside seasoned veterans; and that’s exactly the case for Gatiyatov as he played alongside with Kohei Sato (played with Belfast Giants last season) and Timotej Sille (played with HC Slovan Bratislava last season); which was beneficial for him. He would play 46 games to score 40 Pts. His playmaking game style improved a lot under Simo Karjalainen and Kari Martikainen as he put up 10 more assists than the season before to have a total of 31A. His defensive game improved too, where he had a +/- score of +18; the best in his career. He also showed a great sense of discipline on the ice  when he put up an all time low of 2 PIM which means in 46 games he only got called for one penalty.

He would return to Kazakhstan to re-sign for Nomad Astana after five seasons. Despite being on contract with Nomad Astana twice before he hasn’t played for them but this time he would play 47 games with them. This was his best season since turning professional by putting up 48pts. He just kept improving as he went onto have 15G, 33A and secured 48 Pts. He would be a key asset in the Nomad Astana in their playoff run but sadly it wasn’t to be as they picked up a silver medal; however, he scored 10 Pts in those 13 games.

Another key part to his time with the Nomad Astana was their victory of the IIHF Continental Cup. The IIHF Continental Cup is one of the biggest cups you can win in Europe. He would play the entire tournament and he had a +/- of +5 and a PPG average of 1.33. They would surprise a lot of people when they won all the games in Cardiff to lift the trophy. He was also named the best forward of the tournament.

International Success

In 2016/17 Gatiyatov was selected for the Kazakhstan U18 team for the World Junior Championship (WJC) D1A. He would ice for 5 games to put up 4 points and he had a solid +4 for his +/- stat. He would also have a successful run with the team as they would finish second to get awarded silver. His performance with the U18 national team and his club would get him selected for the U20 national team for the WJC U20. He would play even better by playing all 5 games but this time putting up 7 points which gave him a PPG average of 1.4, and a +/- score of +5 the best in the tournament. He was named the best forward along with most points and most goals; and he won a gold medal too. He would return with them the next year and he scored 8 Pts in 6 games and he was awarded the top 3 player in the team and that would be it because they wouldn’t win any medals.

It wasn’t for 5 years till he played for the national team. This time he was selected by the Kazakhstan international team where he played 3 games and put up 2 Pts.

Potential

Artur Gatiyatov brings experience and a strong track record to the Fife Flyers. His career shows consistent development and success at each level. In the MHL, he demonstrated playmaking abilities, and in professional leagues like the Kazakhstan Hockey League and Finland's Mestis League, he proved his offensive and defensive skills.

Gatiyatov's adaptability will be crucial for his transition to the EIHL. His performances in the IIHF Continental Cup and multiple best forward awards highlight his potential as a game-changer. His disciplined play and scoring ability make him a valuable addition to the Flyers.

International experience with Kazakhstan's U18 and U20 teams shows Gatiyatov's capability in high-pressure situations. His consistent top performance in these tournaments demonstrates his skill and competitiveness.

For the Flyers, Gatiyatov has the potential to fill the void left by Kyle Osterberg. His playmaking and scoring abilities make him a versatile forward who can significantly contribute to the team's offence, while his improved defensive play indicates reliability in the defensive zone.

If Gatiyatov continues his upward trajectory, he could become a key player for the Flyers. His ability to adapt and thrive alongside seasoned veterans will be crucial for his success in the EIHL. With his track record and potential, Gatiyatov has the tools to make a significant impact and help lead the Flyers to success in the upcoming season.
