Ben Norton's Two-Way Contract: Charting the Future of Sheffield Steelers?

The Sheffield Steelers have really used their partnership with the Sheffield Steeldogs to full effect this off season as the sister clubs have announced the signing of Netminder Ben Norton on a 2-way contract. Norton is one of 4 2-way players announced by the clubs as he joins Finlay Ulrick, Nathan Ripley and Curtis Warburton at the dogs. Last season, Norton played his hockey in Bristol where he was a starting netminder there. Norton plays a great game which sees him make some blockbuster saves and at just 20 years old the only way is up for the young shot stopper.

During the 2023/2024 campaign, Norton played 42 times for the Pitbulls where he recorded a save percentage of .861%. This was Norton’s first taste of NIHL hockey as he’d spent the previous 4 years playing in the States. Norton was part of a poor Bristol side which slumped to a last place finish only winning 10 games of hockey. Despite this, Norton was still called up to represent his country at the World Junior Championship U20 D2A. Norton excelled at this tournament playing all five of Great Britain’s games and having a very impressive save percentage of .935%. It is clear why both Aaron Fox and Ben Morgan were keen to sign Norton onto a 2-way contract as the local Sheffield lad is an open fan of the grand slam champions.

Norton will be battling for a regular starting spot at the Steeldogs with fellow Yorkshireman Curtis Warburton. Both players will be hoping to play games for the dogs but will both also want the experience of backing up for the Steelers. This is a common way that Aaron Fox has balanced two British netminders having one on the Steelers bench and one starting for an NIHL club. Norton will be keen to do this as it is his dream to play for the Steelers and represent his hometown club. There is still lots of growth and development to happen for Norton as he will be learning from an import goalie on a regular basis at the Steelers. Although there is nothing official yet, there is heavy speculation that Matt Greenfield will be returning to the Steelers for the 2024/2025 season. This will be a great opportunity for Norton to train and play alongside the EIHL’s 2023/2024 Most Valuable Player.

Ben Norton's signing on a two-way contract with the Sheffield Steelers and Sheffield Steeldogs marks an exciting chapter in the young netminder's career. His impressive performance at the World Junior Championship U20 D2A and his dedication to his hometown team make him a valuable addition to both clubs. Norton's journey from the States to the UK reflects his determination and passion for the game. As he competes for a starting role with the Steeldogs and aims to fulfil his dream of playing for the Steelers, Norton's story is one to watch in the upcoming season. With the potential return of seasoned veteran Matt Greenfield still on the cards, Norton's opportunity to learn and grow in both environments remains promising, setting the stage for an exciting journey ahead.
