Ben O’Connor, Team GB and Dundee Stars defenseman, is set to retire at the end of the season, bringing a legendary chapter of British ice hockey to a close. After an illustrious career, the 36-year-old has decided it’s time to hang up his skates.

From Teenager to Ice Hockey Icon

Starting his professional career as a 19-year-old with the Basingstoke Bison in 2007, O'Connor has since built an incredible legacy. A two-way defenseman known for his skating ability, O’Connor has amassed over 45 career awards, solidifying his place as one of the best British players in EIHL history.

A Career Spanning Continents

Throughout his career, O'Connor has played for multiple EIHL teams, including the Dundee Stars, Edinburgh Capitals, Basingstoke Bison, Sheffield Steelers, Cardiff Devils, Coventry Blaze, and Guildford Flames. He’s also had stints in Kazakhstan, Canada, Sweden, and France. A pivotal figure for Team GB, he helped secure 1 bronze, 3 silver, and 3 gold medals in World Championships.

Trophy-Laden Legacy

His trophy cabinet includes 3 EIHL Championships, 1 Challenge Cup, and 1 British Championship, along with honors in Kazakhstan, the Erste Liga, and Romania.

The Final Push for Playoffs

As O’Connor prepares to step away from the game, he’s still fighting for one more piece of glory with the Dundee Stars, who are battling for a playoff spot against the Manchester Storm. His contributions will be remembered long after he skates off the ice for the final time.

A Fitting Farewell

Ben O’Connor’s retirement marks the end of an era for British ice hockey. As one of the sport’s greatest ever players, his impact both domestically and internationally will be felt for years to come. While his time on the ice may soon be over, O'Connor's legacy as a true icon of the game will never fade, and his final playoff push with the Dundee Stars will be a fitting end to a remarkable career.
