Cole Sanford’s high scoring legacy leaves Devils for ESV Kaufbeuren

Cole Sanford, a fan favourite at the Vindico Arena, has been a top scorer for the Devils over the past three seasons. His talent inevitably drew the attention of top European teams, and it was only a matter of time before he accepted an offer from one of the potential suitors. The lucky team to secure the services of Sanford are ESV Kaufbeuren of Germany’s DEL2.

The Devils secured the signing of Sanford in 2021 when then coach Jarred Skalde brought him to the Welsh Capital. Sanford would go on to play 3 seasons with the Devils under three different coaches. Having played with EIHL royalty in Joey Martin, Evan Mosey and Ben O’Connor, Sanford’s name will be up into consideration with those players especially in Cardiff. Over his three campaigns, Sanford played 157 games whilst scoring 170 league points. This contributed to the Devils 2022 Playoff Championship success. A game where he scored the first goal of the game inside two minutes.

His goal scoring ability was unmatched for the Cardiff side as in the  2022/2023 season, he netted 38 times in league play. Sanford is still a young player too with the 28 year old going into his 5th professional season. Sanford’s efforts have also been picked up across the league as last season, Sanford was elected into the first all star team alongside Steelers forwards Mitchell Balmas and Patrick Watling. During his time with the Devils, Sanford has played numerous games in both the Champions Hockey League and Continental Cup. This is a big taster of how Sanford will get on with his point scoring in these competitions being very good. In his 6 CHL games, Sanford recorded 5 points, 4 of which were goals.

Sanford will be looking to excel at his new home in Germany's second division as he will be aiming to be a top point scorer in the league. Historically, ex EIHL players have transferred very well to the DEL2 so it will be very interesting to see how Sanford gets on. This will be the Canadians first taste of European hockey with his previous experience only being ECHL and EIHL.

Overall, much can be expected of the ex Devils forward as he looks to impress and gain future opportunities in Europe. This will be a great opportunity for Sanford and he will always be remembered by Cardiff fans for seasons to come. A return to the Vindico is not off the cards in the future. Sanford is said to love the Devils and we have seen the Welsh side bring home former imports in the past.
