Colton Saucerman: The Latest Grand Slam Champion to Re-Sign in Sheffield

The Sheffield Steelers have confirmed the re-signing of defenceman Colton Saucerman for a second season. Saucerman joined the Steelers in 2023 from the Allen Americans where he played one season. An immediate fan favourite, Saucerman’s character and infamous beard were hits with the Steelers fans as they battled for all three trophies. During the 23/24 campaign, Saucerman scored 7 league goals as he led his team to the title.

During the 2023/2024 season, Saucerman played 68 games where he scored 50 points in all competitions. This included an impressive night in February where the 32 year old scored 5 points in one game vs the Blaze. This was an impressive season for Saucerman and both he and Aaron Fox will be hoping for more of the same come September. Saucerman plays a great attacking game with his skills being operated on the Steelers power play unit where he scores lots of points. Saucerman also played a heavy number of minutes throughout the season as he had the highest time on ice for the Yorkshire club.

For the majority of the 2023/2024 season, Saucerman played with fellow American Brien Diffley. The duo worked well with each other with both of the players having incredible campaign. On the power play, Saucerman operated on the Steelers first unit alongside forward talents of Patrick Watling, Mitchell Balmas, Mikko Juusola and Daniel Ciampini. Saucerman’s right handed shot led to him being a key part of the power play as it offered some great stability to the power play allowing the undersized defenceman to make plays with ease.

With 3 of 6 defencemen signed up for the 2024/2025 season, and the two others being top pairing duo Kevin Tansey and Dominic Cormier, it is still unknown who Saucerman will be playing with. A possible return of Brien Diffley is not off the cards but there are also numerous names being mentioned across the league for who the Steelers may sign.

Aaron Fox is expecting to see more of the same from Saucerman as he looks to retain the Steelers signings. Fox said, “I couldn’t have asked for more from Colton Saucerman.” This is exemplified by the defenceman’s +39 +/-. Saucerman also is willing to add more trophies to his collection as he said to Peter Spencer, “After an incredible season I wanted to come back and do it all again.” This will be music to Steelers fans ears as they hope to do back to back grand slams for the first time in EIHL history.

The re-signing of Colton Saucerman marks a significant step forward for the Sheffield Steelers as they prepare for the 2024/2025 season. Saucerman’s outstanding performance, both offensively and defensively, has solidified his position as a pivotal player on the team. His chemistry with teammates, particularly on the power play, and his remarkable on-ice presence have earned him admiration from fans and management alike. With Aaron Fox at the helm and Saucerman’s dedication to securing more victories, the Steelers are well-positioned to aim for another triumphant season. Steelers fans can look forward to witnessing Saucerman’s dynamic playmaking and leadership as the team aspires to make EIHL history with back-to-back grand slams.
