Grand Slam Winner Anthony Morrone Departs Steelers for European Opportunity

The Sheffield Steelers have confirmed that netminder Anthony Morrone has departed the club for a starting opportunity in mainland Europe. Morrone was a fantastic backup goalie for Aaron Fox as his perfect record led the Steelers to grand slam glory. The 25 year old shot stopper joined the Steelers from HK Olimpija Ljubljana where he also won the Slovenian league. Morrone has been a winner in his last two locations and is a good character in the dressing room. His iconic dance moves and ‘Eddy’ performances led to Steelers fans falling in love with the Canadian.

Aaron Fox has not ruled out a possible return of Morrone in the future as the Steelers GM has said he is happy for the netminder as he will get a starting spot in Europe. During the 2023/2024 season, Morrone boasted a perfect record playing 16 games in all competitions and winning 16 games. During this time, he scored a save percentage of 93.43%.

Morrone claimed his first Steelers shutout after the Yorkshire club had already become league champions. This came at the hands of the Cardiff Devils when Morrone backstopped an impressive 4-0 victory for the home side. This is just one of the impressive performances that Morrone played for the Steelers as he also was in between the pipes for a 4-3 overtime win in Belfast on the final regular season weekend. This was an iconic game that saw Patrick Watling score an overtime winner and do the trendy selfie stick celebration.

Morrone’s next club has yet to be confirmed but there are a number of possible leagues he could go to. It would be no shock to see Morrone return to the ICEHL where he has played before for EHC Lustenau. This level would be a good test for Morrone as he will be the starting netminder for a team in this league. Another possibility is that Morrone heads back off to France to play in the ligue Magnus. He has played 37 games in this league where he had a 90.1% save percentage. Whatever club Morrone ends up at, they will be lucky to have him. Not just on the ice but off of it too Morrone is a player you need around you with his bubbling personality and exceptional ability in net.
