Rumour True: Scottish Youngster Returns Under Tom Coolen.

Brodie Kay is a 17 year old defenceman from the capital of Scotland, Edinburgh. Kay signed his first ever professional contract last season with the Fife Flyers after Tom Coolen was attracted to the fast skating ability and the good wrist shot the young defenceman has. He placed Kay on a two way contract with Scottish National League (SNL) side Kirkcaldy Kestrels, the affiliation team of the Fife Flyers and this season is no different. Brodie Kay will be on a two way contract with the Flyers and Kestrels for the 24/25 season.

The first recorded evidence of Brodie Kay’s career is in the 18/19 season when he joined the Lanarkshire Lightning U16 based in Perth. The Lanarkshire Lightning U16 is the affiliation team of the Paisley Pirates in the SNL. Kay would be with this team for two seasons, he would play a total of 22 games putting up 13 points which for a young defenseman is quite good. We could tell from these seasons alone that Brodie Kay has the potential to be a 3rd line D-man later on the line and play as an offensive defenceman.

Things would change a lot for Kay before the 20/21 season as he would move from Perth down to Kirkcaldy to join the Fife Falcons, the affiliation team of the Kirkcaldy Kestrels (SNL). Still playing at U16 level with the Falcons, Kay would play 17 games putting up 32 points, averaging around 1.89 points a game which is really good for a defenceman and it truly cemented him as an offensive defenceman. He would also skate for the Fife Falcons U19 team but only played about 9 games but still put up 8 points which was good for him.

All his hard work at U16 and U19 level helped attract the eye of Kirkcaldy Kestrels (SNL) head coach Steven King and Steven Wishart. He would skate with the club a total of 24 games which is more than most 16 year olds would play at a semi professional level, along with that he would put up 18 points which is really good for a 16 year old player. He would also play for the Blackburn Hawks in the National Ice Hockey League 1, he played 12 games with them, this gave him a bit more experience of what ice hockey is like around the UK.

Brodie Kay would make the U18 Team GB squad for the World Junior Cup Division 2-A, he would play five games picking up one point but he displayed a good set of defensive skills, including reading passes well and intercepting them, poke checking them or even throwing the odd hit in. That season the U18 GB Team won a bronze medal, the first recorded achievement in Brodie Kay’s career.

Little did Brodie know that the 23/24 season would be the biggest season of his career. Brodie Kay would sign for the Fife Flyers in the summer of 2023, under Tom Coolen. Coolen liked Kay’s gamestyle and said he thinks that Brodie Kay would become a really skilled defenceman in the future. As we all know growing young homegrown players is key to success for clubs in the EIHL, it is playing the long run with the youth teams.

Brodie Kay would go on to play 23 games but sadly not accumulate more than 15 seconds time on ice average.

Brodie Kay has re-signed for another season under Tom Coolen, still on a two way contract with the Kirkcaldy Kestrels. Will we see Brodie Kay pick up some more ice time with the Flyers or will the Brit situation stay the same in Fife, little to no ice time? We will see…
